Taxing Times | Why Now Is The Right Time To Buy a Double Cab Pick-Up
Are you prepared for the upcoming change in taxation on double cab pick-ups? In measures announced in last year's Autumn Budget, double cab pick-ups purchased after 6th April 2025 will no longer be classified as commercial vehicles in the eyes of HMRC, and therefore significant changes into how they are taxed will come into play.
Importantly however, vehicles ordered or purchased before 6th April 2025 will retain the current Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) and Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) advantages until disposal, lease expiry, or 5th April 2029, whichever comes first. Therefore, as a business or company car buyer, there is still a window of opportunity to acquire a double cab pick-up and benefit from the favourable taxation they currently attract.
At present, double cab pick-ups are taxed at a flat BIK rate, however from 6th April 2025 they will now be taxed inline with their CO2 emissions. The nature of double cab pick-ups means they are often higher polluting vehicles and therefore annual taxation under the new BIK rates will raise significantly, in some cases by thousands of pounds per annum.
The current 100% first year tax relief under the AIA will also come to an end, as from 6th April 2025 they will be subject to the allowances of cars meaning relief drops to as low as 6% each year.
